luminous galaxies I . Chandra Observations of IRAS 00317 - 2142
We present Chandra observations of the enigmatic galaxy IRAS00317-2142, which is classified as a star-forming galaxy on the basis of the ionization level of its emission lines. However, a weak broad Hα wing and a high X-ray luminosity give away the presence of an active nucleus. The Chandra image reveals a nuclear point source (L (2−10keV) ∼ 6 × 10 41 erg s −1), contributing over 80 % of the ga...
متن کاملHst Ultraviolet and Ground-based Optical Spectropolarimetry of Iras Qsos: Dusty Scattering in Luminous Agn
We present UV and optical spectropolarimetry of two highly polarized IRAS -selected QSOs, IRAS 13349+2438 and the BALQSO IRAS 14026+4341. The polarization in both objects rises rapidly toward the blue, peaks near 3000Å in the rest frame and remains nearly constant for shorter wavelengths. The rest frame optical polarized flux density spectra also increase rapidly towards the blue, but then decr...
متن کاملThe Clustering of Iras Galaxies
We investigate the clustering of galaxies in the QDOT redshift survey of IRAS galaxies. We find that the two-point correlation function is well approximated by a powerlaw of slope −1.11±0.09, with clustering length 3.87±0.32h−1 Mpc* out to pair separations of ∼ 25h Mpc. On scales larger than ∼ 40h Mpc, the correlation function is consistent with zero. The rms fluctuation in the count of QDOT ga...
متن کاملThe Luminosity Function of Iras Pscz Galaxies
We estimated the luminosity function (LF) of IRAS galaxies in the PSCz catalogue. The faint end of the PSCz LF is slightly steeper than that of the LF derived by Saunders et al. (1990; S90). Using an analytical form for the LF used by S90, we obtain the following parameters: α = 1.23± 0.04, L∗ = (8.85± 1.75)× 108h−2 L⊙, σ = 0.724± 0.010, and φ∗ = (2.34± 0.30)× 10−2h3 Mpc−3. We also examined the...
متن کاملMid-infrared observations of the ultraluminous galaxies IRAS 14348-1447, IRAS 19254-7245, and IRAS 23128-5919⋆
We present a study of the three ultraluminous infrared galaxies IRAS14348-1447, IRAS19254-7245, and IRAS23128-5919, based on mid-infrared (MIR) spectro-imaging (5–18 μm) observations performed with ISOCAM. We find that the MIR emission from each system, which consists of a pair of interacting late type galaxies, is principally confined to the nuclear regions with diameters of 1–2 kpc and can ac...
